Our volunteers are hugely important to us so we want to make sure you have all the information you need to make the right decision about whether you would enjoy a long-term placement with BRIF. Bangladesh is far off the tourist track, it is one of the poorest countries in the world, and it is possible that you will find our culture challengingly different from your own. For many volunteers, these are their top reasons for coming, but we know that this is not for everybody. So we have compiled a list of some of the main cultural differences so you are able to make as well-informed a decision as possible.
Off the beaten track
BRIF is in the heart of Bangladesh's beautiful rural scenery, and is a wonderfully tranquil location. However, we also know that one person's tranquil is another person's dull! Like most third-world villages, it is very remote in terms of activities and communications, and this can be difficult for volunteers who are used to nearby shops, sporting facilities, social venues and good internet connections. You may also find that you are often the only foreigner for literally miles around. Most volunteers love this immersion in Bangladeshi culture, and we will do our best to enable you to meet other volunteers and help you go on trips to get some city life. Nevertheless, do ask yourself if this remote lifestyle would suit you.
Clothing
Rural Bangladesh is very traditional, and working in a rural village is a great way to immerse yourself in a fascinating culture. One aspect of these traditional values applies to clothing, which may be more conservative than you are used to. Women might like to pick up some of our gorgeous saris or shalwaar kameez, or bring along some loose-fitting clothes from home, as unfortunately vest tops, tight t-shirts, shorts or short skirts are not really the done thing. Similarly for the men, we must also ask you to wear trousers and a shirt when you are out and about.
Alcohol
Bangladesh is a dry country - it is no easy task to find alcohol round these parts. Many people would not fancy a long stint abroad with scarcely a drop to drink, and frankly, we don't blame them! You may have a chance to go to one of the international clubs in Dhaka, but on the whole, you need to be aware that you'll have something of a tee-total lifestyle during your stay.
Of course, we will do all we can to make your stay as happy as possible, and hope that you would find becoming part of the local life to be a fantastic way to learn about other people and yourself. But we also understand that this is not everyone's cup of tea. If, however, you are still keen to give it a go, then we are looking forward to hearing from you!
